Does Your Caregiver Need A Break?

May 11, 2015

Caregivers will go through many emotions during their job of caring for someone dependent on them. Caring for someone every day is an extremely demanding situation and will take its toll on you both mentally and physically. If you do not take care of yourself, you will not be healthy enough to provide care for others. You need to take time for yourself periodically to rest, relax and recharge yourself.

When a caregiver suffers from stress they are putting their own health at risk as well as the one they care for. If you do not take sufficient care of yourself it may lead to any number of physical or emotional problems for you. You could find yourself suffering anything from heart disease to depression, so take the time you need to keep yourself balanced.

Leisure time is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Provide time in your schedule to rest and do something you find enjoyable. Regular time off will give you time to recharge, regain your energy and keep yourself focused. Taking an occasional vacation of a week or even two should also be planned. You only need to plan ahead and make arrangements before you leave.

Plan for who will take over the care while you are gone. Provide them with all the information they will need to continue that care for the length of time you plan to be away. If you feel it is necessary you can always leave a contact number that may help ease your mind while you are away. There may be twinges of guilt, but remember taking a break is going to make you a better caregiver.
